Giraffe Host

I would like to introduce everyone to my latest project, Giraffe Host. What is Giraffe Host? It is a free hosting service for personal website owners. I really missed hosting many people and decided that I should just do it. So I did. :)

When I began hosting websites in 2008 with Bubble Hosting it was something that I really enjoyed doing, and was able to provide free space to over 400 people. Last time I made a few mistakes that I intend to avoid this time (such as upgrading when isn’t necessary and offering paid options).

I like to have projects to work on that have a positive vibe and I am glad I can do this. I hope I can be a free host that is helpful and useful. |)

Step on over to giraffe.host and signup if you need some free space of your own.

  • Congrats on opening a hosting website again! :D I know how much you enjoyed Bubble hosting. I still can’t believe that you ended up closing it. I mean, I can completely understand WHY you did it. It was just surprising since basically everyone knew about Bubble hosting and you enjoyed it so much. So I’m glad that you have found yourself able to get into hosting again.

I completely understand how you feel. Hosting people and being able to provide them with someplace reliable for their websites is a wonderful feeling. It’s why I host people. I have the space and I love being able to help people in this way, since I can. :) My own hosting company has really had a lot of ups and downs – between my being homeless and then just moving around, and even money issues sometimes. It wasn’t just something to do to help others, it’s helped me too. I guess that’s why, even when things got really bad and I really needed the money that I was putting into the site, I still couldn’t give it up. Helping those who I host was helping me too. It just made me happy.

So I can’t imagine how difficult it was for you to have to close your last site. I imagine it was really difficult and took a lot of thought and consideration. Like I said though, it’s great that you could get back into it again. :) It’s something that you really enjoy, so it must be so thrilling to get back into it. :] I’m really happy for you, Kya! :D

    1. Who is your current hosting provider?
My current hosting provider is technically Little Dancer Web Hosting, though that is mine, all of my domains are hosting under it and all servers based on the littledancer.net domain. :)

    2. Have you ever used a free host before?
YES. I went through so many free hosts, it wasn’t even funny. I never had much luck with them and even with paid hosts. Which is why I ended up ultimately buying a server and moving to that instead. At that point, I really started work on Little Dancer – since I had all this extra space on the server.

    3. What free hosting providers to you know about?
Most of the ones I know about are closed now. Since I haven’t looked for a host in so long, I don’t even know whose really out there anymore. Like, I still remember Parade Hosting (I think they’re still around) and even Rewind Host (who I think has since closed), not to mention a ton of others. Lol

If you don’t mind my asking, who is your server with? Or who are you hosted with? I’m not sure if you have a server or not.

Also, for the “pending hostees” and “troubled hostees” on Giraffe Hosting, are these updated automatically or manually? It kind of looks like you might use a fanlisting script to do this and it’s kind of a neat idea. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t wanna share your secret. I was just wondering. It’s cool. :) So I was just curious as to if you updated this manually, used a script, or some sort of plugin, or what? I’m nosy. Lol.

Anyway, the site looks absolutely terrific! As usual, Kya! :D

That is really awesome that you have your own space and can host people as well. It is a good feeling and can be a way that allows you to focus on a positive project that can have a good impact for others as well. It’s a win/win situation. :D

It was incredibly hard to have to close the site. I made a few decisions at the time that I thought where my only options. Like merging it into my business. But it took away the essence of what it was, and I realize that I don’t want to do that again.

I currently use a VPS provided by WiredTree. I also have a dedicated server with them too and have had several in the past. They have been amazing. :D Servers are top notch and their support can be really helpful. :D

I use a script to manage the website called Hostish. That was created by Hannah. I am not sure of her website at the moment or if she has one. The script was originally custom made by Hannah for Bubble so it has some cool functions that work as I need and can display stats. :D

I am happy to answer any other questions you might have too. Just send me an email to kya@love.com :D

  • I’m so happy you decided to offer free hosting again! It’s so kind of you and I’m sure you will be able to make so many people happy!

I’m currently hosted with WiredTree, and I completely love their service. I guess I finally found a web host that completely suits my needs!

I’ve never used free hosting before, mostly because my projects always have been a bit too “heavy” for something I would get for free and in my opinion consuming too many resources when I don’t pay anything doesn’t seem the right thing to do for me. I don’t really know of free hosting services as I’ve never looked around for it.

Well, good luck on your new project!! :D

    • Kya

      Thank you! :)

WiredTree is a really awesome provider and I use them myself for both of my servers and very rarely have any problems. :) It’s good when you can find a provider you are happy with and you can trust.

  • Congratulations on getting your hosting site back into gear! I can’t imagine having to give up the entire empire that you built. I’m sure your hosting will be successful once again :).

My current host provider is Ofblue (formerly Secretkiss) for the past 4 years. I only used free hosts when I was on subdomains before and went on paid hosting once I had a domain.

The free webhosts part, I refer to Alice’s list: http://make.ricetard.nu/misc/web-hosts/

    • Kya

Thank you so much and for letting me know your current host.

That list is so awesome, thank you for sharing!!

  • Kya, Kya! It’s so good to hear you are hosting again. I hope you don’t get bogged down in it, but if you missed it, it’s a sure sign you will love it again. I love the name, it oozes YOU. :D

I’ll be honest and say I don’t miss hosting people, I guess it took up too much of my time, time that I wanted to spend doing other things. I love helping people but I am glad I can still help them in other ways, and receiving emails from people asking for help about code is now to a minimum (which is good, haha…!), but it still makes me feel good to know that people appreciate my help. I know you were, and are, the same.

    Questions
    1. Who is your current hosting provider?
    YOU! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
    2. Have you ever used a free host before?
    YES!
    3. What free hosting providers to you know about?
    YOU! :p

    Haha, well, I know of a couple others, Nancy runs one with Isi, I think. I don’t know of many ^_^;

    • Kya

Thank you so much. :D *squishy*

It can be something that has to be done in the right way and kind of at the right time. If that makes sense. xD

  • Congratulations on getting your hosting site back, it’s always so much fun to do ;) I really do like the name of it, haha! My current host provider is antagonist, a Dutch provider. I did use free host before in the past, but most of the free hosting sites are down already :( So it’s a good thing you’re doing it again! ;)

    xxx

    • Kya

Thanks! That was one of the reasons why I decided to bring the site back, because a number of them had closed down and I thought it was a shame that it didn’t exist anymore. Hopefully more will spring back up as well! :)

  • I think it’s great that you’re offering free hosting. I looked into it myself, but I use too much space, I’m at about 800mb disk space right now or I’d consider it.

    • It seems I had a bunch of backups taking up space.

      • Kya

Even though I couldn’t help you, I’m glad you found the space issues!

  • Nice to see you opening this up, its been ages since I’ve seen a free hosting community of the like before. I’ve been hosted by VentraIP for years now, which I’ve had nothing but great experiences with. I do remember back in the day there used to be LOADS of free fansite hosting which I used to occasionally jump at the opportunity for when I’d be looking for a new project – man it feels like that was worlds away. I hope giraffe goes well for you!

    • Kya

      Thank you so much. :)

  • Congratulations on opening your hosting website again! I hope it is as successful as your previous hosting website! I actually remember the days of bubble.nu and how great the community was!

    1. Who is your current hosting provider?
My current hosting provider is kerriwaller.com (:

    2. Have you ever used a free host before?
    Yes!

    3. What free hosting providers to you know about?
The ones I went through probably closed by now. However, I remember the days of ParadeHosting, RigRag, Bubble Hosting, SecretKiss and so-pink.org hosting as well (:

    • Kya

      Thank you! :D

  • Congratulations on starting your project again! :)
The name Giraffe Host is so cute! I think it’ll be really popular!
Can’t wait to see all the sites that you host.

    1. Who is your current hosting provider? I host myself on a reseller package. I need to host my portfolio, blog, etc..
    2. Have you ever used a free host before? Yep. I used cbd-hosting for a few years until it poof-ed(which led my website poof-ing). So I decided to buy my own reseller so I can control the fate of my sites.
    3. What free hosting providers to you know about? I know quite a few.. inactive ones. So I’m glad yours popped up. :)

    • Kya

      Thank you! :D

  • I’m glad you’re hosting again! I used to be hosted at Bubble, and it was my introduction to hosting with cpanel and a community!

    1. Who is your current hosting provider?
I used A Small Orange, and they’re really good and pretty good value for money. Their support team is quick, understanding and reliable.
    2. Have you ever used a free host before?
Yes :) As I said, I used to be hosted by Bubble and I was also hosted by a friend for a while, before my website got a little too big.
    3. What free hosting providers to you know about?
I only know of ones who I see advertising on their websites.

    • Sorry, I *use*, not *used* A Small Orange!

  • Danette

Oof! I’m so excited you’re hosting again :) I would apply straightaway, but I don’t know if I still have examples o_o will have to look!

  • AMAZING PLACE!!! THANK YOU!!! :D
