Twenty Eight

On March 11, I turned 28. It wasn’t all doomy and gloomy, but it did feel strange. Yesterday I thought I was only a teen, and now I am inching towards 30.

I think the most important thing that I realised is; I don’t have to act my age, I only have to be myself. My age does not define who I am or dictate how I should live.

Maybe I like cute and childish things, collect toys and make art that is basically all the fluffy feelings rolled into shapes. It’s okay, because I like these things and they make me happy. I might not be living independently with a traditional family of my own, or have a life that is ‘normal’ but that is who I am.

My style and sense of inspiration may change in the future, yet I will continue to like and love what matters to me. There are always opportunities to grow and develop, you can take them with open arms if you are willing to improve yourself and understand that we transition in our own way.

As we grow, life will demand news things from us. We may be working under new requirements, but it does not mean that we have to loose ourselves either.

My mum and dad brought me a necklace, it’s so lovely.

Although, Oscar was a bit bored.

  • Happy Birthday, Kya! I just recently turned 30, and I feel so old . . . X___X; I try not to let age dictate me, and I generally don’t. But there are some days when I look at myself and feel like I’m so far behind on what I “should” be doing by this age with such things like paying a mortgage on house, being married with kids, and so forth so on.

But one thing I will not let age get to me is my hobbies. Korean culture dictates that animes/mangas/video games are for children only, but I ignore that perception. It took a while, but my mum also ignores it. One time when I was in my early 20s, I was playing my Nintendo DS, and one of my aunts looked at me and said, “You still play video games?” My mum stuck up for me saying that it’s fine what I do since I’m doing good in school LOL.

Anyway, kudos to you for not letting age dictate you! And what a pretty necklace and a beautiful cat! Thanks for sharing those photos :D

      *squish*

  • The necklace is lovely! I have learnt over the last few years that your age is really just a number. Do what you like and try to be happy seem to be more important than worrying about what your age is.

    1. How old are you? 31
    2. How does your age make you feel? I used to worry about it, when I turned 30 I focused a lot on what I hadn’t achieved in life but as I get older I care less. It could be related to the fact that I’m achieving more because I’m putting more effort into being happy rather than focusing on wasted time. Not sure.
    3. Do you feel pressure to act a certain way because of your age? Not really.. I remember I did back in my early 20s. I was an adult I should act like one! Pfft.. now I’ve realised people generally don’t act like adults.. you do what is necessary to get through life but fun is still fun and usually a bit childish.

    • Kya

I am really glad that you are thinking that way and can focus on what is important. :D

  • Happy birthday, Kya! I came to the same realization when I turned 20. I felt like since I’m all “adult” now, I have to act like it all the time. But being one is sooo boring. Singing and dancing randomly in public is where it’s at!! =)) I realized I only have to love myself and maybe that’s being an adult.

    • Kya

Thank you! I think you are 1000% right. :D

  • Hope you had a great birthday! The necklace is beautiful.
I think it’s great you don’t let age dictate you! You can like whatever you like and do whatever you want to do, regardless of age! I’m 23 now, but after university I stopped really paying attention to my age, or other people’s ages. Enjoy being you, not your age! x

    • Kya

      Thank you. :)

  • Happy belated birthday! I view age in a very similar way to you. It shouldn’t even matter. It’s just a number after all.

I’m 21. I feel like the number makes me seem young and perhaps immature, which is not the case. I’m often told that I am years ahead of my actual age.

    • Kya

      Thank you! :)

  • I agree with you! Acting like an “adult” feels so stressful, just be yourself! Anyway, we have our different preferences and pacing as to how we want to go through with our lives and as long as you’re making the most out of your life, that’s fine! :)

That necklace is so lovely! I’d love to have one like that too :)

    1. How old are you?
    – 21

    2. How does your age make you feel?
    – I actually feel pressured because my friends are more “grown-up” than I am right now, but hey, I’ve always been a late bloomer. Lol!

    3. Do you feel pressure to act a certain way because of your age?
    – Yes. A lot of people my age are always full of energy and look like they have everything under control, but I just remind myself that I will be able to do those things soon.

    • Kya

Sometimes we just have to get their in our own time and I am sure you will! :)

  • I turned 18 on the 13th of March, so we’re only a few days apart! :P That’s quite cool. One of my good friends has her birthday the day before mine, which was always very fun growing up.

    1. I can now say I’m 18, which is lovely.

    2. Young. Much younger than I actually feel. Most days I feel like an old soul in a young person’s body surrounded by other young people, which truly makes for a hard time getting through school. But it’s all right. :P

    3. Nope! If anything, I’m glad I’m an old soul in a young person’s body. People assume I’m much older than I am — usually early 20s — because despite a youngish-looking face, I carry myself as someone who is a few years older might.

    • Kya

      Happy belated birthday! :D

  • Happy birthday, Kya!!!!! (: I hope you had a wonderful one! I get the whole strange feeling. That’s how I felt when I turned 20 this year. I can’t say “it’s because I’m a teenager” anymore, hahaha.

    1. How old are you? TWENTY :D

    2. How does your age make you feel?
Old. So old. I’ve been saying that since I turned 10 though (oh those double digits)

    3. Do you feel pressure to act a certain way because of your age?
Not really. I’m a senior when I’m supposed to be a junior in college (I skipped a grade). So a lot of people think I’m actually 22 or 23. Apparently, I act pretty mature for my age. I’ve been getting that since I was 10 though. I think it’s because I’m an only child.

    • Kya

      Thank you! :D

    • Kya

      *high five*

  • Happy belated birthday, Kya! Age doesn’t define people in what they’re supposed to do. There’s always that general stereotype behind what people do in a certain age but people don’t need to follow it. For sure, you can always love cute things no matter the age! I like how you have all of the cutest things!!! It’s sweet of your parents to buy you the necklace :3.

I’m 20, I feel like I’m a bit too young for my age (people say I could fit in as a high schooler). Though I feel no pressure to act my age at all. I do as I please :D.

    • Kya

Thank you! That is great you do as you please, because in the end you have to do what matters to you.

  • Happy belated birthday! And please – don’t act your age! I’m 33 and, of course, in some things you have to act like your age (at work when it comes to making decisions for example) but, I love everything with Hello Kitty, I buy stuffed animals from Pixar movies, I love to swing on playgrounds… I think it’s so important to keep the child in you. I don’t feel a pressure to act a certain way and my age doesn’t make me feel old. I was scared of turning 30 but really, it’s just a number :)
The necklace is very pretty, I like it lots.

    • Kya

Thank you and you’re right! :D

  • Happy belated birthday! That necklace is GORGEOUS! I hope the rest of the day was wonderful, too. I quite enjoyed the way you spoke about your age, very enlightened.

As for myself, I’m 21 and definitely don’t feel it. I don’t know, in some ways I feel a bit young in terms of life experience, but in other ways I feel like I’ve outgrown a lot of typical 21-year-old lifestyle aspects (like clubbing, etc). Its a confusing age to be, regardless.

    • Kya

      Thank you. :)

  • Happy birthday again! I think you’re a wonderful person who brings great energy and creativity to what you do. Definitely fun and whimsical, but I wouldn’t call you childish at all!

I’m 30. It’s terrible! XD I’m already going grey, but I’ve always dyed my hair, so I get away with that.

I’ve always had a baby face. I used to look at my aunts, and wonder when I was going to look like a “proper” woman. Never happened. I’m glad though, I happy with how I look and how I feel about myself.

I think I feel more pressure to be mature because of my son, rather than my age. Still, I have never been the type to do things because I was supposed to. I just enjoy what I enjoy. I do what makes me happy.

    • Kya

Thank you. :) Hair dye is great, I know someone who was 20 when SHE started getting grey hair. I guess it doesn’t discriminate sometimes.

  • This is the best attitude to have, be happy as you are and don’t feel you need to live up to expectations. Things happen in their own time and in there own way – there are no set goals you need to reach by a certain age.

I’m 28 (almost 29 :( ) but I don’t feel pressure to act a certain age. I do feel as though I should have achieved more, but I’m getting there in my own time.

Happy (belated) birthday! I actually turned 30, just two days after your birthday. I feel like our age isn’t defined by our interests and hobbies. As we grow, we mature and learn to handle situations differently and make better decisions. I feel like that’s more important when it comes to “acting our age”. I still love cute things, watch a ton of cartoons, play lots of video games, and collect figurines. I don’t think things like that will ever change for me :)

The necklace your parents got you is so pretty and cute! I hope you had a great birthday!

    • Kya

Thank you and I agree! :)

  • Congratulations on being 28! You say it so well, that age doesn’t define who you are. I’m 41 and I definitely don’t feel so old. Maybe because there is this expectation on what you should have done and who you should be when you’re 40+ or even 35+. I don’t have kids and I spend hours CSS:ing, editing photos, or play musical instruments, instead of cleaning my house or similar things. I guess I want to spend my very little free time on things that I enjoy, and do those other things when I have to or have the inspiration.
And I don’t really care, and try to just do my thing and enjoy it.

    • Kya

That is a very good point. Time can go by so fast and you should do the things you enjoy. :D

    Happy Belated Birthday, Lovely! =)
First, thank you so much for your words on my last post! I’m glad you’re willing to talk.

You are so right that you don’t have to “act your age” because your interest and personality is not determined by the number of years you are alive and I think you’re fantastic!

The necklace you got it so cute!

    • Kya

      *huggle*

  • Belated happy birthday, dearest! I hope you had a blast on your special day. The necklace is very beautiful! :)

    1. How old are you?
    I’m turning 23 this April. :)

    2. How does your age make you feel?
It makes me feel a lot of things, but mostly, I feel pressured about not having enough accomplishments in life.

    3. Do you feel pressure to act a certain way because of your age?
I think there is always a certain pressure, whatever your age is. There will always be expectations to meet, an ideal situation that the society dictates, and it’s not making everything better. -_-

    • Kya

      Thank you! :D

  • Happy Belated Birthday! Now, I have an excuse to get you those gifts I told you about. Although, I knew there was a reason behind getting those gifts. So, be expecting something in the mail from me, fairly soon.

I absolutely adore the necklace! Reminds me of a charm bracelet!

    Questions
    1. How old are you?
I’m 32 years old. I may not look it, but I am. Most people intend to believe I’m 26. Or look it.
    2. How does your age make you feel?
How am I supposed to feel? I honestly don’t feel any older then I did before I hit 32.
    3. Do you feel pressure to act a certain way because of your age?
I actually don’t feel pressure at all. I’m told to be me, and that’s what I tend to do!

    • Kya

      Thank you. :)

  • Happy Belated Birthday Kya!!! I’ll be 35 in a few months and don’t have kids, am not married (though I am in a committed relationship and live with him) and don’t live in a house with a “white picket fence”. I understand what you mean. I am certainly not where I figured I would be at this point or where my friends and family figured I would be. But you just can’t let age define you. I really believe in “you’re only as old as you feel”, in more ways then one. I feel sometimes like I am not accomplishing and living up to my childhood dreams and hopes and aspirations, but then again I am not who I was then… I do feel a lot of pressure to act a certain way or be a certain person however I just let it go, cause I am who I am.

    • Kya

You are indeed and that is all you can be. :D

  • I just turned 21 (just last March 8) and I still forget to say I’m 21 when people ask me. I agree with you totally, I’m a little rough and people are trying to say I should be more feminine because I’m older but I’m confident of my awesomeness and I feel like the world is my oyster and I dont have to submit to anyone’s will for me if I dont agree.

Keep on liking fluffy things and I’ll keep on boxing. Gosh, why are the people around us so bored? Dont they have their own lives to criticize? Oh, right. No one does that :)

    • Kya

      :D RIGHT!

  • Belated happy birthday, Kya!

I’m 26. I have a feeling my mid-to-late 20s will be much better than my early 20s. XD I’m a lot happier and more confident at this age. I think it’s true that things only get better as you get older, so I’m not scared of the 30s anymore.

I’ve never let myself be bound to how I’m supposed to act age-wise and I think such “rules” only contribute to the problematic view that women are only valuable when they’re young, but I think there’s a natural progression to how I view myself and things around me as I keep growing. I used to love really cute things (I still do!), and I don’t own as much of it anymore. I don’t feel like it’s “me” now. Not because of my age, but because my style is evolving. I guess it’s because my life in general is a mess. I try to pare down where I can.

    • Kya

That is a very good point and I think it’s true. Women are awesome at any age!

  • So true, while some people can be their age, not a lot of people can be, and even then age doesn’t define you. Age really is a number at times. Happy birthday ^^ That’s why I don’t respect numbers, I respect the person because they earned it, you know?

    • Kya

Thank you and that makes sense!

  • I feel like I’m 20 years old. So that’s all that matters. :)

    • Kya

      YES!

  • Happy belated birthday, Kya!!

I’ll be 21 in about a week and I feel like how I act is normal for my age. I feel like I should start acting more like an adult though, and that I should have a better job than I do now for my age. I am starting to feel pressure to start interviewing and networking and trying for internships, which sucks. I feel like I’m underachieving at the moment. So not too great :(

    • Kya

Thank you! I hope you have a great birthday and try not to worry too much. Everything will fall into place and you will meet the people and do the things. xD
